Disable Charms Bar Hint in Windows 8

One feature in Windows 8 many may find to be annoying, is the activation of charms bar when your mouse moves to the right corners. Although the feature in Windows 8 lets you quickly access settings and perform searches while in the Modern UI environment, it pops open many a times when the mouse pointer accidentally goes near the top or bottom right side corner of the screen.

The issue however can be addressed with a bit of registry editing. There's a registry hack that allows you to disable Charms bar completelybut that might not prove that useful. So, there's a simple one. There's a registry value that can be added to the registry editor so that the charms bar does not show up when the mouse moves to the right side corners.

Disable Windows 8 Charms bar

You may right-click on the Windows 8.1 Taskbar and select properties to open Taskbar Properties box. Under Navigation tab, uncheck the When I point to the upper-right corner show the charms option.

Click Apply and exit. Do note that this will disable the Charms bar, only when you point to the upper right corner.

There is another way out, by editing the registry.

Open the 'Registry Editor' first. To do so, right-click in bottom left corner to open Win+X menu, select Run, type regedit.exe and hit Enter.

Now, in the 'Registry Editor' Windows that opens up on your computer screen search for the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell

Here, you will be required to create a new key. Right click in the right pane > New >  Key and name it EdgeUI.

Click on the newly created EdgeUI key and in the right pane, right-click and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it DisableCharmsHint and assign a value of 1 to it. Click OK and exit the Registry Editor.

You will now notice that when you move your mouse to the right side top or bottom corners, the charms bar will not appear.

To bring up the Charms Bar, you will have to move the mouse to the top or bottom right side corners and then move it to the center of the screen. Only then will the Charms Bar appear. Or you can use the Win+C hot keys too!

To restore the charges, simply delete the EdgeUI key. Do remember to create a system restore point first before editing the registry.
