KODI was already the premier open-source home entertainment software. It is the perfect way to play music, movies, home videos, pictures, and games. But, with the recent release of KODI 17.4, the industry leader just got even better. The KODI development team has shown once again that they value their community and are willing to fix issues today instead of just forcing everyone to wait for the next version.

With this update everything you love about KODI, including the flexibility, the different media formats, and the reliability is now even better.

What KODI 17.4 Includes

It has been a while since the last update. While 17.3 fixed a ton of issues, since that release several other bugs have become apparent. KODI 17.4 addressed all of the known bugs and gives users a much smoother experience.

Here are the Windows bugs this new update fixes:

• Windows crashes due to a Python issue
• Windows from crashing when enabling zeroconf
• Occasional Windows crashes when installing updates or add-ons

This update also addresses the following Linux issues:

• Corrects possible issue if Linux distro uses system ffmpeg and cause black screen with 10-bit H.265
• Stops possible crash on Linux when using ALSA

KODI 17.4 also corrects these IOS and Android interface problems:

• Fixes native keyboard on iOS 11
• Prevents potential crash on Android O loading App icons
• Fixes non showing KODI banner on Android O
• Stops potential crash on Android with certain keymaps
• Fixes wrong detection of VP6 and VP8 video codec on Android

KODI 17.4 also fixed several connection and system issues including:

• Solved issue for users using reverse proxies attempting to forward websockets
• Creating a proper throttlefor scraping music information online to prevent overloading the provider
• Updates FFmpeg to 3.1.9
• Setting hard requirement to use FFmpeg 3.1.x only
• Solved hang-up when viewing recording and pressing next/previous
• Fixed merged scraped album type and label correctly with that derived from tags from music files
• Allow you to save skin settings immediately after they have changed instead of only on shutdown

While none of these fixes are game changers on their own, each bug on its own could very annoying to users. By fixing all of these small issues in one update instead of forcing users to deal with them until the next version KODI makes its already incredible platform that much better.

What's Next for KODI?

KODI, in keeping with its policy, did not release any new features with this latest update. Instead, the developers are focusing on making sure everything works great with the this update without risking introducing new bugs by trying to also add new features.

But, KODI developers are busy working on version 18, which promises to be a major step forward for the software. Version 18, codenamed Leia, will be the first version of KODI to be available as a Windows 64-bit application and has several major upgrades to the Android version as well.

Version 18 is currently in beta and no final release date has been set.
