Fix Cannot create System Backup Image in Windows 8 UEFI x86 computer

The System Backup Image feature in Windows 7 and in Windows 8 is a great way to create a backup image of your system. Using this tool, you can back up or clone an image of your disk. You no longer need to use a 3rd party imaging software to do it. This system image can be used to restore your computer if your hard drive or computer stops working. Although this feature has been removed in Windows 8.1, users of Windows 8 do use this feature often.

There may however be cases where you may be unable to create a System Backup Image in Windows 8. For instance, if you have installed an Windows 8 x86 on a UEFI x86-based computer, you may not be able to create a system backup image, even by doing any of the following:

  1. Clicking the Create a system repair disk link from the Windows File Recovery Control Panel item
  2. Use the Recovery Control Panel
  3. Running Recdisc.exe command from an administrative command prompt.

If you are unsure if your computer supports UEFI or Legacy boot, you may want to find that out first. If you attempt to create image backups on such systems, you may receive the following error message:

0x80070057 (ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER)

This problem occurs because Windows 8 incorrectly checks and recognizes UEFI x86 as being unsupported.

Microsoft has released a hotfix to resolve this issue, but you will have to contact the Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. More details can be had at KB2859791.
